Flocculator Mixers
Flocculator mixers provide gentle overall mixing to promote the agglomeration and compacting of colloidal particles into a larger mass. Mechanical agitation increases the opportunity for particle to particle contact. Flocculation is a function of fluid motion, to promote contact, with a concern for shear level, so as not to break up the agglomerated floc particles. Therefore, the flocculator impeller must provide maximum fluid motion while creating a minimum amount of shear or turbulence.
During flocculation at a water purification plant, raw water is brought into large basins from a local stream, river, or underground aquifers. In the basins, mixers run at very low rotation and generate very little shear. The aim is to get the raw water solids moving, to bump into each other, stick, and form flocculants (or flocs). Once formed, these heavy flocs move to a sedimentation basin, where they sink to the bottom and are filtered out or pumped away.
